Simple summer pleasures…

Diplo’s propulsive, warm, satisfying new single “Crown” hit dance floors across the planet this week.

International sensation Diplo A.K.A. Wesley Pentz was born in Tupelo, Mississippi in 1978. His family moved to Florida shortly after that. Wesley worked in his dad’s bait shop and scouted TV and the internet for music that inspired him.

At 18 he went to college in Philadelphia at Temple University as a Film and Music major. He got a job as a social worker part-time and became known in his community as the creator of the Hollertronix club night. His DJ name was Diplo.

Diplo’s first official release was Florida in 2004. An XL record representative was attracted by Diplo’s warm, edgy beats and introduced him to M.I.A. in 2004.

M.I.A. and Diplo collaborated on the mixtape Piracy Funds Terrorism. Diplo and Maya dated, and he helped to produce her first record Arular. Together they hit number three on the U.S. charts with her masterpiece “Paper Planes.”

Here’s the M.I.A./Diplo version of “Piracy Funds Terrorism” that samples the 70s TV show Sanford and Son.

Diplo’s produced since for: Radiohead, Britney Spears, Missy Elliott, Santigold, Beck and more.

My favorite collaborative project of Diplo’s is Major Laser with DJ/Producer Switch.

Check out the reggae vibe and analog vinyl and stereo effects on the song “Can’t Stop Now.”

Diplo’s announced that he’s working on a TV show.  He’s also performing quite a bit this summer.
