Every generation gets its own rock stars. And Jack White stakes his claim with the stripped-down, bluesy rawness that is his first solo release Blunderbuss.

Jack White’s skin is almost as gothy-white, and his clothes as black, as the Cure’s Robert Smith. His deadpan vocal delivery is somewhere between an urban Dylan and a geek-generation’s Lou Reed.

The music itself ranges from scorching  garage to Rolling Stones roots to a Led Zeppelin-meets-Motown sound.

At first hearing of Jack White on his own on this new record, I missed Meg. His former partner in the White Stripes also had a talent for spareness. Meg also had a warming effect on the songs with her earthy drums and vocals. But Jack allows for the space left by her. And he fills it majestically.

The result is lyrical and dark, especially on his duet with Ghana-born Nashville artist Ruby Amanfu – “Love Interruption”.

Remember the days when you’d go to the music store to get your favorite artist’s new release? You’d take it home and feel the excitement of that first track blasting into the room. The sense of a new time, marked by music.  Blunderbuss one of those records.

Here’s the opening track to Jack White’s new release Blunderbuss – “Missing Pieces”.

Best known for his work with iconic garage-rock band the White Stripes and second band the Raconteurs, White’s also collaborated with the Kills’ Alison Mosshart in side project the Dead Weather.

Jack White’s new solo record shot right up to number one on the American charts. It’s the first of his projects to go directly to the top.

Here’s the hardest-hitting song on Blunderbuss – “Sixteen Saltines”.
