Summer Records – James Brown, Allen Stone, Jack White, Little Dragon, Pixies and Goldfrapp

This recently reprinted collection is the least-known best party record ever.

Here are a few of my secret summer records. These artists’ releases come fully tested and highly recommended.

Best Summer Soul – Tried and True -James Brown – James Brown’s Funky People Volume 1

On this rare collection The Godfather of Soul plays lesser-known funk songs that are as strong as his legendary rhythm machine. Joined by soul veterans Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker and singer Lyn Collins, this record doesn’t give up until the last song goes quiet. And neither will you.

Best Summer Soul – New – Allen Stone – Allen Stone

This Seattle singer’s voice reminds me of Al Green at times. His drive and horns bring back Otis Redding. Every song is good on his first full-length soul album.

Best Summer Indie Rock – New – Jack White – Blunderbuss

If you hear someone this summer say that new rock and roll has no merit, hit them with (the volume from) this brilliant new rock release. Jack White’s work with bands: The White Stripes, Dead Weather and The Raconteurs left us wondering how he could top it. And he has.

Best Summer Indie Rock – Tried and true – Pixies – Surfer Rosa

Feedback meets surf rock in this alternative rock classic from one of the world’s greatest geek bands.

Electronic Dance – New – Little Dragon – Ritual Union

Swedish group Little Dragon bring warm dance songs with a sophisticated, modern twist.

Electronic Dance – Tried and True – Goldfrapp – Supernature

This sexy club record from Bath, England group Goldfrapp beats out the band’s other releases, and is at the top of any modern summer playlist.
